How we verify voting information

VoteDeadline.com uses a source-first editorial process.

Our preferred source for a voting deadline is the official election authority responsible for administering that information. Depending on the state, this may be a Secretary of State, state board or commission of elections, another state agency, or a county or local election office.

We also use Vote.gov, USA.gov and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to locate and cross-check official election resources. Third-party sources may help us identify information that requires review, but we do not treat a third-party publication as the final authority when an official government source is available.

What "Last verified" means

'Last verified' means that VoteDeadline.com checked the displayed fact against the source linked beside it on the date shown. It does not mean that the election authority has promised not to change the information after that date.

Election-specific deadlines

VoteDeadline.com does not automatically calculate and publish an election deadline from a general rule such as '30 days before Election Day.' An election-specific date is published only after it is verified against an official source.

When information is not verified

If we cannot verify an election-specific date, we display 'Verification in progress' rather than guessing. We continue to provide a link to the responsible election authority whenever possible.

If you believe information on VoteDeadline.com is incorrect or outdated, use our contact page and include the state, the information in question and, if possible, the official source.

Final responsibility

Election information can change. Voters should confirm critical information with their state or local election authority, particularly when acting close to a deadline.
